They work for the safety of roads, sometimes risking their lives: men and women in safety vest, agents of roads and highways. The number of accidents in areas where they work has soared since the beginning of the year. They therefore launched an awareness campaign.
On the area, between Toulouse and Montalba, hard to miss: a yellow van of the motorway company, whose back is completely smashed. "He was in protection on the A62 motorway, explains Thierry Lasagna, regional director of Vinci Auto route Aquitaine-Midi-Pyrenees. An accident had just occurred, when a truck hit him. It made a good 100 meters forward in shock, and he shrank by two meters ".
Fortunately, that day, no highways agent was on board. But these accidents are more and more frequent: since the beginning of the year, there have already been 200, almost one per day, on French roads.
Basic rules often forgotten
Respect the safety distances, do not ride on the emergency stop band, and most importantly, slow down when you see a yellow vest, these are the basic rules that are obviously not known to all. 32% of motorists admit that they do not always slow down when approaching a construction site on the highway. And some behaviors are even unconscious, denounces Thierry Gravis, head of one of the intervention centers of the A68.
On the area, the road agents met the motorists
"There are displaced cones, or people who pass behind the cones for double," explains the agent of Dir Sod-Oust. This summer on a large construction site, vehicles were returning to the site to double. motorists phone, when they know that something is happening they look at what is happening instead of looking ahead, and at the slightest slowdown, boom, they get into the car in front. Sometimes insulting or spitting on it, because we cause caps, we have the right to everything! "
However, these men and women in high visibility vest who risk their lives every day are there to ensure the safety of drivers, during construction or in case of accident. To try to change things, awareness campaigns are held throughout France this Saturday. A shock campaign was also launched by motorway companies in the media and on the internet.
